See how our tornado shelters stack up against the competition

Having an underground shelter in your house is easily one of the best things that you can do to ensure that you and your family are safe when the next tornado hits. We’ve mentioned in a few of our blogs that there are plenty of ways that you can calm your children and family down so that they are prepared to handle the situation like a pro, but one of the things we have spent very little time covering is how to keep your pet calm throughout the storm.

Our blog post today is going to cover a few things that you can do to ensure that your pets remain calm the next time that a tornado touches the ground.

Introduce Them to the Space

When pets are in a space that they’re not familiar with, it’s not uncommon for them to feel a little bit anxious and start to panic. One of the best things that you can do to avoid this is introduce them to the space prior to a storm hitting. When you do go into this space, make sure that they take their time in their seriously and don’t play around or think that it’s playtime. In the case of a real emergency, the last thing that you’re going to want is a dog that’s ready for playtime. Show them how to sit properly in this space, or even lay down, so that they know how they should be acting when/if they need to go into the space for protection.

Crates Help Too

If you have a pet that you know has pretty high anxiety levels, then the best thing that you can do is plan for that in advance. Depending on the size of your underground shelter, do your best to try and bring a crate in. Not only are crates easily recognizable as a safe space for your pet, but they can make the process of managing your pet, much easier. If you do plan on bringing the crate into the shelter, then make sure that you practice having them in the room while their crate is also in there so that they can get comfortable in the scenario.

One of the best things that you can do when you have a pet in your shelter ensures that you’re maintaining a calm and collected voice so that they don’t have any sense of urgency or fear while they’re with you. It may seem like such a small thing to do, but the truth is that our pets will always react to the emotions that we’re conveying in these instances.
