An EF-5 tornado is the most dangerous and violent rating that can be given to a tornado. These become some of the most well-known tornadoes in history because they cause the most damage and are the most impactful storms to touch down. At FamilySAFE, we build above and below-ground shelters to protect you and your family should an EF-5 ever touch down in your neighborhood. Here is exactly what classifies an EF-5 tornado. For protection from inclement weather, check out our tornado shelters today!
Wind Speeds
Tornados are mainly classified by their wind speeds. An EF-1 tornado comes with three-second wind gusts of 65-85 mph, while an EF-5 tornado is accompanied by three-second gusts of 200 mph or more! You need a specialized safe room for these kinds of storms. Luckily FamilySAFE makes shelters that will survive these storms.
Storm Intensity
EF-5 tornadoes are usually accompanied by severe lightning, hail, and strong winds even outside of the tornado. While the intensity is not an official part of the tornado rating system, it is often considered when predicting the intensity of possible tornadoes in the weather forecast.
Damage Potential
Damage potential — where a tornado will touch down combined with wind speeds and storm intensity — also plays a role in rating a tornado. For instance, a tornado that touches down in a metropolitan area will likely receive a slightly higher rating than a tornado that touches down in farm country simply because it will do more damage. Our shelters have survived some of the most damaging tornadoes in history and will protect you and your family from extremely damaging storms.
Famous EF-5 Tornadoes
The Joplin, Missouri tornado in 2011 and The Monster Tornado in 1947 are two of the most deadly tornadoes in history and were both rated as EF-5 tornadoes. In 2013, an EF-5 tornado also ripped through Moore, Oklahoma, and ravaged an entire city. Many of our tornado shelters were in the Moore, OK tornado and survived without a dent.
FamilySAFE storm shelters are tested and proven to protect the lives of families that find themselves in the sights of EF-5 tornadoes. If you live in tornado country and are looking for protection, check out our models and learn more about our above-ground shelters today!
